About Me

Phyu Phyu Thein, known by her stage name PHYU PHYU KYAW THEIN was born on April 22,1981, in Rangoon (Yangon), the capital of Burma (Myanmar) to a couple of two economists. PPKT is the younger of two children. Her sister is a surgeon as well as the designer of her flamboyant wardrobe.

EARLY LIFE 1981 to 2000

Being brought up in a Christian family in a former British colony where Christians form 7 percent of the population, she started singing in the choir of the Immanuel Baptist Church at the heart of Rangoon since her teens. She is still singing as a soprano soloist in the same choir years after becoming a celebrity singer. Apart from that she had never received any formal vocal training as the country does not have any school for study in western music. Her religious background gives her an inclination to sing western music while the local music is based on unique but different set of rules.

Discography

Subsequent release of her first album "NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU AGAIN" in November of the same year was more of a breakthrough than a success. The new generation embraced her with their hearts wide open while it provoked a lot of controversies among the old-liners. The 30 second long TV commercial for her new album was banned from airing from a local TV channel (one of two in the country both state-owned) after appearing for two days supposedly because of her 'unusual style of singing'. These were days when artists worked under heavy censorship and all new creations were viewed suspiciously from authority.
